Artisanal Gold Tour "El Rancho"

Discover the gold miners' secrets in the community that gave Rancho Quemado its name. Try your luck with the gold pan!

Artisanal Gold Tour "El Rancho"

The community of Rancho Quemado was founded by a settlement of gold miners in the 1940s. Through camps made with leaves of a local plant known as "suita", which were called "ranchos", the community got its name — and so does this artisanal gold tour.

During this tour you will learn about the history of the community and its name, and about the gold miners' tools and their use. You will enjoy a hike to the creek along a beautiful trail through the forest, and discover the miners' secrets to tell whether there is gold in that spot. Every visitor has the opportunity to "try their luck" and work with the cateadora (gold pan) to find the prized gold nuggets, also called "ojitos de zancudo" and "purrujas". Learn the process of separating the gold found from other metals to obtain clean 24-karat gold.

The tour ends with a delicious traditional refreshment prepared by Mrs. Nuria López in the kitchen of the rancho.

Tour duration: approximately 2 hours.
